Waipa ‘Home of Champions’ – why it should be your new sporting home

Kiwis love their sport, and if we are able to live somewhere that allows us to enjoy it in all its glory, there’s no doubt we’ll be over the moon. Cambridge, in the heart of the Waipa ‘Home of Champions’ region, has something on offer for everyone. From spectators to participants, Cambridge has you covered, which means that if you choose to build your new home here, you can join in too!

Water, water everywhere – and plenty to see and do

The mighty Waikato River runs right through Cambridge, providing a whole raft (excuse the pun!) of water-based activities. Then there is the famous Lake Karapiro – an artificial reservoir lake and New Zealand’s home of rowing. It’s also a great spot for swimming, kayaking, skiing and boating.

Get on yer bike

Like bikes? You’ll love Cambridge! Indoors and out, there’s all sorts on offer here. From the Te Miro Mountain Bike Park (20 minutes north-east of Cambridge) to nature trails along the Waikato River and, of course, NZ’s national velodrome, where you can have a go on the track and even book regular sessions if you find that it’s something you enjoy. There are also pro and amateur BMX tracks at the Cambridge BMX Club.

With plenty of options for the novice or more experienced, whether you like a thrill or prefer more of a meander, the tracks in Cambridge are world-class.

Harness up on the back of a horse

The Cambridge Raceway is an exciting place to visit if harness horse racing is on your list of must-see sports! There are races all year round, with special events held regularly. And if you want to get in amongst the action, you can slip into a silky and jump into a sulky, with an experienced harness driver at the helm.

Celebrate the sporting legends of yesterday

Cambridge has no shortage of famous sportspeople who call this Waikato town home. Have you heard of Sarah Ulmer? How about Rob Waddell? Two legends among many others, including 13 Melbourne Cup winners. Take a walk down the main streets, Duke Street and Victoria Street, to see these achievements honoured with plaques and mosaics along the Sporting Walk of Fame.

Cheer on the sporting heroes of tomorrow

With so many fantastic sporting facilities and venues in Cambridge it’s no wonder that many events are held here annually, including the National Waka Ama Championships, National Dragon Boat Championships, National Secondary Schools Rowing Regatta (Maadi Cup), NZ GP Hydroplane Championships – the list goes on. Join us in cheering on our future champions!

Live here and love it!

Sold on all the sport? Now it’s time to put up the sold sign on your new home – and we can help with that. We are currently selling House and Land packages in one of Cambridge’s premier residential developments, and really, why wouldn’t you want to live in Waipa ‘Home of Champions’?
